In a world where spirituality is increasingly explored online, TikTok has become a major platform for spiritual discovery among young people.
The app’s quick and engaging content format, coupled with its vast reach, makes it a powerful tool for shaping young minds. While there is much to celebrate in the spiritual curiosity of Generation Z and the growing presence of Christian content on social media, we must also be aware of more concerning trends—such as #WitchTok.
One of the most popular movements on TikTok is “WitchTok,” which has drawn millions of viewers over the past few years. WitchTok is a subculture where users share videos about witchcraft, spells, tarot readings, astrology, and other occult practices. Currently, videos tagged with #WitchTok have garnered approximately 64.8 billion views.
At first glance, this content may seem harmless or even trendy, with its engaging aesthetics and promise of personal empowerment. Content creators often appear relatable, charismatic, and approachable, subverting the traditional image of “witchiness.” However, what may seem like harmless fun—such as exploring zodiac signs, casting a “harmless” love spell, or participating in a moon ritual—can actually open doors to spiritual risks and confusion.
The TikTok algorithm, which tailors content to individual users based on what they engage with, can quickly lead curious young people deeper into potentially harmful content. What may begin as innocent exploration can evolve into a fascination with practices that contradict the teachings of Scripture. As youth ministers, parents, and church leaders, it is crucial to understand this phenomenon and take proactive steps to guide young people toward truth and spiritual safety.
The Lure of WitchTok: What’s Behind Its Appeal?
1. A Sense of Community:
WitchTok offers young people a sense of community and belonging, creating a space where they can connect with others who share similar interests. Its alternative nature provides a refuge for those who may see themselves as different or who have struggled to fit in in their everyday lives. In a world where many feel isolated or misunderstood, this sense of connection can be incredibly appealing. There is even an element of mentorship within the WitchTok community, as more experienced practitioners guide and teach those who are newly initiated.
The Bible teaches us the importance of community—community centred on Jesus and rooted in truth. Hebrews 10:24-25 urges believers to “consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together…but encouraging one another.” The Christian community should offer not only truth but deep relationships, support, and accountability, helping our young people grow in faith. It should be a place where they find real belonging and purpose, grounded in Christ. We must seriously consider if that is the experience and reality of the young people in our church family, or would they have cause to seek relational support elsewhere?
2. A Desire for Control:
Many young people are drawn to WitchTok because it promises control over life’s uncertainties. The allure of personal empowerment, combined with the aesthetic appeal of crystals, spells, and rituals, makes these practices particularly tempting for those seeking identity and stability in an unpredictable world.
However, the Bible warns against seeking power outside of God’s guidance. Deuteronomy 18:10-12 cautions against practices like divination and sorcery, reminding us that these things are not only deceptive but detestable to the Lord. While it may be easy to dismiss WitchTok’s practices as harmless cultural trends, it’s important to recognise that we are in a spiritual battle. The enemy seeks to distract and confuse young minds, leading them away from the truth.
There are countless testimonies from Christians who, in their youth, engaged with the occult and later experienced long-term spiritual consequences. We should not be mistaken in thinking these practices are benign.
The reality of course is that our sovereign God is in control, and therefore we don’t have to be! A truth we must help our young people to grasp richly and deeply.
3. Seeking Answers for Mental Health Struggles:
In an age where mental health struggles are on the rise, WitchTok often presents itself as a quick-fix solution to life’s challenges, offering spells for anxiety relief or rituals for success. These practices can feel especially tempting to young people who are searching for meaning, purpose, and relief from their struggles.
While seeking relief from mental health concerns is understandable, turning to occult practices can complicate a person’s spiritual journey and may even increase feelings of confusion and anxiety over time. The peace that God offers is lasting and transformative, not based on rituals or quick fixes but on a deep, personal relationship with Him.
Guiding Young People Toward Truth
As parents, youth ministers, and church leaders, we have a responsibility to guide young people toward the truth of the Gospel. Here are some practical steps to help:
1. Educate on the Dangers:
We must educate young people about the spiritual dangers of witchcraft and occult practices. Scripture clearly warns that such practices lead people away from God. Helping young people understand why these things are harmful from a biblical perspective will empower them to make wise, informed decisions about what they engage with online and where they chose to put their trust.
2. Encourage Biblical Literacy:
Encourage young people to study Scripture regularly and deeply, help them to see its inerrant and sufficient nature. Show them that God’s Word provides the true wisdom they need to navigate life’s challenges, far more effectively than any TikTok trend. As Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” By immersing themselves in Scripture, young people will be better equipped to discern false teachings and resist spiritual counterfeits.
3. Model Authentic Faith:
Young people are searching for something real. Demonstrating an authentic, vibrant faith in Jesus can have a lasting impact. By sharing your struggles and showing how your faith guides you, you offer a powerful example of how God works in the ups and downs of life. Integrity and joy in faith are contagious and will speak volumes to the next generation. The living testimony of a mature Christian who has experienced the seriousness and consequences of dabbling in the occult could be really helpful for young people.
4. Create a Safe Space for Questions:
Young people have questions, and they need a safe, open space to ask them. Encourage honest conversations about faith, doubts, and the appeal of trends like WitchTok. By fostering an environment of trust, we open the door for deeper conversations about the truths of the Gospel and what it means to follow Jesus.
The Power of Truth
In a world filled with spiritual counterfeits, it’s more important than ever to ground young people in the truth of God’s Word. WitchTok and similar trends may offer a tempting mix of community, control, and quick fixes, but they ultimately lead away from the peace and purpose found in Christ. Let us be vigilant, prayerful, and proactive in guiding the next generation toward the one true source of light and life—Jesus Christ. As John 8:32 reminds us, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
